AI SEO course
An AI SEO course is training in how to gain visibility in AI-generated search results and answer engines, a field also called generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) or large language model optimization (LLMO), with no consensus definition as of early 2026.[1] The GEO label dates from a research paper submitted in November 2023, and the earliest clearly dated provider launch found is April 2024; courses now range from free manuals and vendor academy courses to paid live cohorts and subscription communities, most of the communities hosted on Skool, at prices verified on 27 August 2026 from free to $1,995 a year.[2][3][4] Google's documentation, last updated 10 December 2025, states that no special files, markup or structured data are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.[5]

An AI SEO course is a course that teaches how to make websites, brands and content visible in answer systems built on generative artificial intelligence. The label overlaps with generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), artificial intelligence optimization (AIO) and large language model optimization (LLMO); as of early 2026 none of these terms had a consensus definition, and Wikipedia redirects "AI SEO" to its article on GEO.[1] One practitioner audit draws the line this way: AEO comes from the featured-snippet era and is about being the extracted answer, GEO is about being retrieved and cited by a generative model, and AI SEO is the umbrella term that also takes in the separate activity of using AI tools inside an SEO workflow.[4]
The term GEO entered the research literature with a paper submitted to arXiv on 16 November 2023 and later accepted at KDD 2024.[2] Courses under the AI SEO label appeared alongside Google's generative search features: the Search Generative Experience was unveiled in May 2023, AI Overviews launched in the United States on 14 May 2024, and AI Mode testing began in March 2025.[14] The earliest clearly dated provider launch found in the research for this article is a Yoast training course announced on 9 April 2024, which is not asserted to be the first.[3]
Formats run from free manuals and free vendor academy courses to paid self-paced video, paid live cohorts, paid subscription communities, most of them hosted on Skool (see AI SEO Rainmakers), and marketplace courses on Udemy and Coursera.[4][15] Prices verified by hand on 27 August 2026 ran from free to $1,995 a year.[4] The search term "ai seo course" drew about 250 searches a month in the United States according to Ahrefs data checked on 27 August 2026.[4]
Background[edit]
Chronology[edit]
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 30 November 2022 | OpenAI introduces ChatGPT as a research preview.[16] |
| 10 May 2023 | Google announces the Search Generative Experience as a Search Labs experiment in US English.[17] |
| 16 November 2023 | "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" is submitted to arXiv. The paper is revised on 28 June 2024 and accepted at KDD 2024; it defines GEO as a framework for optimizing content visibility in generative-engine responses.[2] |
| 9 April 2024 | Yoast announces its "AI for SEO" training, the earliest clearly dated provider launch found for this article.[3] |
| 14 May 2024 | AI Overviews launch in the United States. They reach more than 100 countries by 28 October 2024 and more than 200 countries and territories in over 40 languages by May 2025.[14] |
| 5 March 2025 | Google introduces AI Mode as an opt-in Labs experiment and describes it as using a "query fan-out" across subtopics and data sources.[18] |
| May 2025 | Perplexity handles 780 million queries in the month, according to its chief executive as reported by TechCrunch on 5 June 2025.[19] |
Evidence and counter-evidence[edit]
The commercial case for the category rests on measured changes in click behaviour. Ahrefs reported on 4 February 2026 that, across 300,000 keywords, the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58.0% lower average clickthrough rate at position 1, a 50.8% drop at position 2 and a 19.4% drop at position 10; the widely quoted 34.5% figure is the superseded April 2025 number.[20]
The counter-evidence concerns how much traffic the AI channel sends. Semrush measured traffic across more than 50,000 websites in 17 industries from January to December 2025 and found that AI referral traffic grew 66%, from 462 million to 767 million monthly visits, while still making up under 0.15% of total visits; Google AI Mode went from 1,600 to 38.2 million visits across the year, 0.01% of total traffic.[21] BrightEdge measured ChatGPT mentioning brands about 3.2 times more often than it cited them with a link, 2.4 mentions against 0.74 citations per prompt.[22]
Google's own documentation, last updated 10 December 2025, states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, that no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup are needed, and that there is no special schema.org structured data to add.[5] The vocabulary is unsettled enough that Wikipedia's article on generative engine optimization was flagged in August 2026 as potentially documenting a neologism, with a request for more reliable sources to establish usage.[1]
Curriculum[edit]
The chapter list of one free manual, The AI Search Manual by iPullRank, gives a topic list that recurs across the category: how AI search systems retrieve and cite, retrieval-augmented generation and vector embeddings, query fan-out, passage-level retrieval and chunking, crawler access and robots controls, entity building and Knowledge Graph work, schema and structured data, content strategy for LLM discovery, and measurement of AI visibility.[7] It is one publisher's chapter list, not a standard.[7]
| Topic | What it covers | Example of a course listing it |
|---|---|---|
| How AI search systems retrieve and cite | Retrieval-augmented generation and vector embeddings.[7] | Ahrefs Academy: "AI-search mechanics" and "citation differences".[8] |
| Query fan-out | One query becomes several sub-queries. Google describes AI Mode this way.[7][18] | Google's AI Mode announcement of 5 March 2025.[18] |
| Passage-level retrieval and chunking | Structuring content at the chunk level.[7] | Rankmax: "content structure".[6] |
| Crawler access and robots controls | Google names nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex, robots.txt directives and Google-Extended.[5] | Rankmax: "technical foundations". Ahrefs Academy: "technical AEO".[6][8] |
| Entity building and Knowledge Graph work | Listed in the manual's chapters.[7] | No named example among the courses checked. |
| Schema and structured data | Listed in the manual's chapters. Google states that no special schema is required (see above).[7][5] | No named example among the courses checked. |
| Content strategy for LLM discovery | Listed in the manual's chapters.[7] | Ahrefs Academy: "content, mentions, YouTube".[8] |
| Prompt or query research | Which prompts a brand appears in, and where competitors appear instead.[8] | Ahrefs Academy: "prompt research" and "brand-gap analysis".[8] |
| Measurement of AI visibility | Listed in the manual's chapters.[7] | Ahrefs Academy: "measurement". Rankmax: "visibility check".[8][6] |
| AI-assisted workflows | Using AI tools inside an SEO workflow, a separate activity from AI search visibility.[4] | AI SEO Operators: more than 50 cloneable n8n, Claude and Python workflows.[23] |
The last row is the strand that a 27 August 2026 audit describes as "using AI in your own workflow", which it says vendors bundle in to make courses look fuller.[4]
Formats[edit]
The same 27 August 2026 audit of 19 courses sorted the category into six formats: free manuals and roadmaps, free vendor academy courses with certificates, paid self-paced video courses, paid live cohorts, paid subscription communities, mostly on Skool, and marketplace courses on Udemy and Coursera.[4] Two further formats appear among the sources for this article: trade-press masterclasses and email courses.[24][6] In the audit's price bands, paid courses ran from $299 to $1,995 a year, paid communities from $27 to $259 a month, and cost per hour of instruction from $0 to roughly $166.[4]
| Format | Example | Details, with the date checked |
|---|---|---|
| Free manual or roadmap | Learning AI Search, Aleyda Solis | Free, no advertising, no paid inclusions, no certificate. A four-section roadmap; version 4 is dated 20 March 2026.[25] |
| Free vendor academy course with certificate | AI Visibility Essentials with Semrush | Free, 20 lessons, roughly 1 hour 13 minutes, certificate on completion.[9] HubSpot Academy likewise labels its AEO Fundamentals course a certification.[26] |
| Paid self-paced video | AI for SEO training, Yoast SEO Academy | 10 video lessons in 3 modules, two to six hours, certificate and badge, included in paid Yoast plans.[27] |
| Paid live cohort | AEO Masterclass, Maven | $499 for two 90-minute live sessions plus four modules; next cohort listed for 28 to 29 October 2026 as of 17 September 2026.[12] |
| Paid subscription community | Communities on Skool | Skool is a community platform founded by Sam Ovens that combines course hosting, a forum and gamified levels. Alex Hormozi announced an investment in it on 10 January 2024, describing it as the largest investment of his life.[28] Examples are in the table below. |
| Marketplace course | GEO Specialization, Edureka on Coursera | Three courses of 9, 8 and 7 hours, included with Coursera Plus, rated 3.4 out of 5 from 11 reviews, with 1,838 learners enrolled as of 17 September 2026.[29] |
| Trade-press masterclass | GEO Master Class, SMX | $299 for about 4 hours 45 minutes of live instruction with Will Scott on 14 April 2026, on-demand access until 16 August 2026.[24] |

An audit of 19 AI SEO courses published by Charles Floate on 27 August 2026, scored on a rubric of his own, ranked The AI Search Manual first at 86 out of 100.[7] Floate runs one of the paid communities in the table and did not score his own product, writing that "scoring yourself on a rubric you wrote is not a review, it is an advert with a table in it".[4] The scores are one practitioner's rubric and are not reproduced in the table.
AI SEO Rainmakers, founded in August 2026 by Charles Floate, filled its 100 founding seats within hours of early access opening on 15 August 2026 and held a 5.0 rating from 34 Skool reviews on 17 September 2026.[10][15] The community has its own article: AI SEO Rainmakers.
Criticism[edit]
Criticism of the category comes from publishers, analysts, Google's own documentation and from within the industry. Each point below is attributed to its source. One of those sources, the 27 August 2026 audit, was written by the founder of a competing paid community, who did not score his own product.[4]
Lack of an agreed definition[edit]
GEO, AEO, AIO, LLMO and AI SEO overlap and, as of early 2026, had no consensus definition.[1] One vendor's course page describes the same product as an "AI SEO course" and as a way to "optimize for LLMs like ChatGPT".[9] Wikipedia flagged its GEO article in August 2026 as potentially documenting a neologism and asked for more reliable sources to establish usage and impact on the field.[1] An SEO manager at a large lifestyle publisher told Digiday in August 2025 that the industry had not yet decided what to call the practice, let alone whether it was real.[34]
Analyst view[edit]
Nikhil Lai of Forrester Research argued in 2025 that answer engine optimization and related terms are "significantly, but not fundamentally, different from SEO", and that advocates "tend to exaggerate SEO and AEO's differences to carve a startup-sized hole in marketers' tech stacks".[1] Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special structured data to add.[5] The controls it names are ordinary indexing and snippet controls: pages must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and the levers are nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex, robots.txt directives and Google-Extended.[5]
Publisher adoption[edit]
Five publishers told Digiday in August 2025 that they were holding back on GEO.[34] Neil Vogel, chief executive of People Inc, said: "This whole conversation is not rooted in any fact. If there's anyone who can prove to me that they can optimize the output of these rapidly developing tools, I would love to talk to them." Lily Ray, vice president of SEO strategy and research at Amsive, said: "Anybody that's pretending to be an expert in GEO, they're lying."[34] The measured size of the channel is small: AI referral traffic was under 0.15% of visits across more than 50,000 sites in 2025.[21] ChatGPT mentioned brands about 3.2 times more often than it linked to them.[22]
Decay of recorded material[edit]
SEO.Stream, the publisher of a paid community, describes a recorded course as "a photograph of a moving target", on the grounds that model versions, AI Mode and AI Overview citation logic all moved in the twelve months to August 2026.[30] The record supports the premise. AI Mode began as an opt-in Labs experiment on 5 March 2025,[18] and in Semrush's sample it went from 1,600 to 38.2 million monthly visits across 2025.[21] The click-loss figure most often quoted in course material moved from 34.5% in April 2025 to 58.0% in February 2026, so material still quoting the older number is more than a year out of date.[20]
Curriculum gaps and accreditation[edit]
Across all 19 courses in the 27 August 2026 audit, none mentioned llms.txt, none named Claude among the AI systems taught, none taught mention-based measurement, none covered the paid route to citation, and none covered vertical differences such as iGaming, crypto, legal or YMYL; most taught Google's published guidelines rather than what the leaks and antitrust testimony described.[4] The audit's author sells a competing product and did not score it.[4]
No accrediting body has authority in the field. The audit describes the certificates it reviewed as issued by companies selling software and calls a certificate in a discipline roughly 18 months old "a participation trophy".[4] HubSpot Academy labels its AEO Fundamentals course a certification; neither it, Yoast nor Semrush names an external accreditor on the pages reviewed, and absence on the page is not proof that none exists.[26] One certification body describes itself as the global standard for AEO education and certification, names no third-party accreditation body, and charges $9, $29 and $49 for its three exam levels.[35]
Labelling, disclosure and roundups[edit]
Several page properties among the top results for the term show labelling and disclosure problems. The course ranking first on Google US for "ai seo course" on 27 August 2026 carried a URL slug from a general SEO course, and most of its 26 sections covered classic SEO; it listed 245 lectures, 14 hours 52 minutes and around 119,000 students.[36] The asset ranking fifth was a form-gated resource bundle with no named instructor, no published curriculum and no stated runtime, whose copy still promised results "in 2024 and beyond".[37] The most expensive item in the audit, a $1,995-a-year membership, published neither price nor length on its course page; the price was obtainable only from the provider's help-desk documentation, and its three testimonials were dated November 2023.[33] A $997 self-paced course anchored its price against a claimed value of "over $3,497" while the same company ran a free training hub of 8 modules and 29 lessons with a verifiable certificate.[32]
Roundups have a disclosure problem of their own. A listicle ranking sixth on Google US said "seven" in its title, heading and introduction but listed eight courses, three of them the publisher's own products, including the number one pick; it was the single most-cited editorial source in Google's AI Overview for the term on 27 August 2026.[4] A "10 Best AI SEO Courses" post published on 3 June 2026 ranked its author's own three products first, second and third, with a disclosure that the author runs one of them.[38] On marketplaces, instructor credentials can be thin: one GEO course's instructor rating rested on 7 ratings,[39] another instructor had 87 courses on the platform,[40] and a seven-course professional certificate listed a corporate entity with 514 courses as its instructor and was rated 3.7 out of 5 from 7 reviews.[41]
